Third World Love’s New Blues is Released
Anzic Records is proud to announce the release Third World Love’s New Blues - available in stores and online today. Owen McNally of the Hartford Courant says “With its sophisticated, seductive synthesis of jazz, African, Latin and Middle Eastern music, Third World Love (TWL) has been inspiring large, young crowds throughout Israel and Europe to dance and party to its genre-bending celebrations. Anzic Records in JazzTimes Year in Review
Three Anzic Records releases were mentioned on JazzTime’s list of top-50 CDs. “Everything about Noir is first-rate…” says the magazine, ranking the release at number 45. Jason Lindner’s Live at the Jazz Gallery appears at number 29, and Anat Cohen’s Poetica at number 17, with the assertion that “2007 belonged to the busy Israeli reedist”. Anat is also mentioned in the magazine’s readers’ poll “Best Artist - Clarinet” category.
Poetica on Slate’s Best of 2007 List
Anat Cohen joins Charlie Mingus, Maria Schneider, Erik Friedlander, Carla Bley, Paul Bley, Herbie Hancock, Paul Motian, Joe Lovano & Hank Jones on Slate magazine’s “Best Jazz Albums of 2007″ list. Fred Kaplan writes:
“Anat Cohen…Israeli born-and-bred, Berklee-trained, Manhattan-honed—is a fresh breeze on the jazz scene, a clarinetist who plays with high spirits, a silky tone, and a hard-polished edge. Her music reflects her multiple influences: folk, klezmer, Brazilian choro, a whiff of Dixie, as well as modern jazz. Poetica…features spirited originals, a Jacques Brel tune, and a cover of Coltrane’s “Lonnie’s Lament” (with string quartet) that’s as stirring as any out there.”
Critical Acclaim for Braid
Braid by 3 Cohens, released November 20th, is receiving an enthusiastic response from the press. Here is what they are saying:
“…arresting sophomore album…”
Nate Chinen, New York Times
“Anat has emerged as one of the best clarinet players in jazz…the record is best when they strain against the composed lines and babble together in intuitive counterpoint. It makes a strong case for each of them individually, but it’s a surprisingly good band record too.”
Ben Ratliff, New York Times
“…this a real band, reaching a level of communication bound by family ties, deepened by long hours on the bandstand and enlivened by an obvious love of the artform. The 3 Cohens have arrived, and hopefully this is only the beginning”
Greg Camphire, AllAboutJazz.com
“…if there’s any group that illustrates how profoundly and effortlessly international jazz has become in the new millennium, it’s this one”
The Buffalo News
“A blue-chip import from Israel, the Cohens - three gifted Tel Aviv-born siblings - gladden the American jazz scene with this delightful, tightly-knit, celebratory collaboration.”
OWEN MCNALLY, Hartford Courant
“…[a] polyphonic pip.”
Village Voice
“In Braid…we hear the continuation of that conversation in 10 delightful tracks that highlight their individual talents but, even more impressively, showcase their superb ensemble interplay, harmony, and complementary tones.
Rovokovo.com
“Van Heusen and Burke’s “It Could Happen to You,” quickly develops into an imaginative, fugue-like interpretation. Another special number is Yuval’s “Elegy for Eliku,” an eloquent bit of pensive jazz”
Philip Van Vleck, Billboard Magazine
